Data-backed guide
Rope drop at Disney World, ride by ride: what the opening-hour data shows
For 26 rides at four Walt Disney World parks, the median posted wait in the opening hour versus 11am to 4pm, June to October 2026. Some drop to 5 minutes; others barely move.
Rope drop helps some rides a lot and others hardly at all. In WaitScout's data from 2026-06-02 to 2026-10-19, Jungle Cruise, Tiana's Bayou Adventure, Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, Soarin' Across America and Expedition Everest had a median posted wait of 5 minutes in the opening hour, against 30 to 40 minutes between 11am and 4pm. Slinky Dog Dash had a median of 60 minutes in the opening hour and 65 at midday.
These are posted waits, not measured standing time. The "opening hour" is the earliest local hour with data on 100 or more days, not the exact minute the gates open. The rest of this guide gives all 26 rides with enough opening-hour data, the ones where rope drop gains little, and the ones we cannot judge.
Which Disney World rides have a shorter wait at rope drop?
The table lists every ride that has at least 200 posted waits in the opening hour. "Opening hour" is 8am at Magic Kingdom, EPCOT and Hollywood Studios, and 7am at Animal Kingdom. Shows, meet-and-greets and films are left out. "Midday" pools the 11am to 4pm stretch (the 11am through 3pm hours). Medians are in minutes.

The opening-hour medians rest on a few hundred posted waits per ride, against thousands at midday. Treat them as a direction, not an exact number.
Which rides barely change at rope drop?
Five rides held a median at or near their midday number in the opening hour. Remy's Ratatouille Adventure was 45 in both. Mission: SPACE was 15 in both. Slinky Dog Dash was 60 at opening and 65 at midday. Avatar Flight of Passage was 45 and 50. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train was 40 and 45.
For these, the opening hour is not the cheap hour. Slinky Dog Dash and Avatar Flight of Passage are also the top-ranked rides at their parks by overall median (60 and 50 minutes), so arriving early did not clear their lines in this data. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, the top-ranked ride at EPCOT, fell only from 70 to 60.
Which rides drop the most at rope drop?
Six rides had an opening-hour median of 5 minutes: Jungle Cruise, Tiana's Bayou Adventure, Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, Soarin' Across America, Alien Swirling Saucers and Expedition Everest. Their midday medians were 30 to 40 minutes.
Six more fell to 10 to 15 minutes at opening against 35 to 45 at midday: Na'vi River Journey (10 vs 45), Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (10 vs 35), Space Mountain (15 vs 35), Toy Story Mania! (15 vs 40), Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run (15 vs 35), and The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror (13 vs 35).
What should you do first at each park?
The data suggests a different first move at each park. Check the live list for your park before you commit.
- Magic Kingdom. TRON Lightcycle / Run had an opening-hour median of 37.5 minutes, against 55 at midday. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train was 40 at opening and 45 at midday. These two had the longest opening-hour medians in the park, so they are first-priority rides if you want them. Rides like Jungle Cruise (5 vs 35) can wait for a gap. Live list: Magic Kingdom wait times.
- EPCOT. Test Track went from 70 at midday to 40 at opening, and Frozen Ever After from 55 to 25. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind did not fall far, from 70 to 60. Live list: EPCOT wait times.
- Hollywood Studios. Rock 'n' Roller Coaster fell from 55 to 30, and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance from 50 to 35. Slinky Dog Dash barely moved, from 65 to 60. Live list: Hollywood Studios wait times.
- Animal Kingdom. Na'vi River Journey fell from 45 to 10 and Expedition Everest from 30 to 5, while Avatar Flight of Passage went from 50 to 45. Live list: Animal Kingdom wait times.
Which rides can't we judge for rope drop?
Some attractions have no posted wait at all in the opening hour, so there is no opening-hour figure to show. Kali River Rapids and Kilimanjaro Safaris at Animal Kingdom are two of them. We left those rows blank rather than estimate them.
Character meet-and-greets, shows and films are also left out of the table. They are not rides, and none listed in the data's opening-hour rows has an opening-hour wait.
Is rope drop worth it, or is the last hour better?
For the rides above with a big gap, the opening hour is a clear win in this data. For the comparison of the first hour, midday and the last hour across a whole park, see rope drop or last hour. For hour-by-hour numbers at the largest park, see Magic Kingdom wait times by hour, and for planning a day first, see the best day of the week at each park. To compare dates, use the EPCOT crowd calendar, and for Lightning Lane prices at the park with the highest hourly medians from 11am to 3pm, see Hollywood Studios Lightning Lane.
One thing a table cannot do is tell you the moment a line shortens after rope drop. The WaitScout iPhone app can alert you when a ride's posted wait drops, so you can move on to the next ride the moment its line falls. See the app features.
FAQ
Do you need to be at the gate before opening?
We cannot say. Park opening times are not in our data, so the "opening hour" is the earliest local hour with data on 100 or more days.
Which Disney World ride has the shortest wait at rope drop?
In this data, several rides had an opening-hour median of 5 minutes, including Jungle Cruise, Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin and Soarin' Across America.
Does rope drop help Slinky Dog Dash?
Little. Its median was 60 minutes in the opening hour and 65 at midday, based on 346 and 2,295 posted waits.
Are these the real waits people stood in?
No. They are posted waits, rounded to 5 minutes.
Does this apply in winter or holiday weeks?
We cannot say. Our data starts on 2026-06-02 and covers summer and early autumn only.
Methodology
<!-- claims:exempt -->Every figure comes from WaitScout's wait_history table, from 2026-06-02 to 2026-10-19 (140 local days), converted to America/New_York. Only rows with a posted wait are used. "Opening hour" is local hour 8 for Magic Kingdom, EPCOT and Hollywood Studios, and hour 7 for Animal Kingdom, the earliest hour with data on 100 or more days at each park. "Midday" pools local hours 11 to 15. Medians are exact medians of posted minutes, and posted minutes come in 5-minute steps, which is why differences of 5 minutes are not strong evidence. The table includes rides with at least 200 posted waits in the opening hour; a ride is judged only where the opening-hour sample is in the hundreds. Rides with no opening-hour rows are left blank. Character meet-and-greets, shows and films are excluded. Park opening times are not in the database. There is no winter, spring or holiday data.
